Fireplace Repair
San Juan Capistrano, CA
Firebox cracks, damper failures, gas insert service, smoke problems, and full fireplace restoration from Dave Callison at OC Clean Sweep. 25+ years in South OC. The work is done right or it doesn’t leave.
San Juan Capistrano Homes Have Character – And Older Fireplaces
San Juan Capistrano is one of the oldest cities in California. The historic neighborhoods near the Mission, the ranch-style homes along Camino Capistrano, the equestrian properties in the hills above the Ortega Highway – many of these homes have fireplaces that have been in service for decades. That’s a good thing. But older fireplaces require more attention than newer ones.
Cracks in the firebox refractory panels, dampers that stick or won’t seal, smoke that backs up into the room instead of drawing up the flue, gas insert components that fail after years of use – these are all common in SJC homes. None of them are emergencies if caught early. All of them become expensive if left alone.
Dave Callison at OC Clean Sweep handles fireplace repair across South OC. He looks at the full system, tells you what’s actually wrong, and fixes it correctly. No manufactured problems, no pressure on extras.
“Dave was absolutely the right choice to repair my chimney and give me some great advice about cleaning and installing a gas insert for my fireplace. He was prompt, professional and knowledgeable. His estimates were very reasonable. I would highly recommend him!”

Common Fireplace Problems in San Juan Capistrano Homes
Cracked Firebox Panels
The refractory panels lining the firebox are designed to withstand extreme heat, but they crack over time from thermal expansion and contraction. Hairline cracks in older SJC homes are common and usually not urgent. Deep cracks or missing sections are a different story – they expose the surrounding masonry to direct flame and heat, which can cause structural damage and carbon monoxide intrusion into the wall cavity. Dave inspects the panels on every visit and tells you which cracks are cosmetic and which need repair.
Damper Problems
A damper that won’t open means no fire. A damper that won’t close means heat loss, drafts, and animals getting in. Both are straightforward repairs in most cases – damper plates rust and seize in coastal and semi-coastal conditions like SJC, and the hardware is replaceable without rebuilding the firebox. Dave stocks common damper components and can usually complete the repair on the first visit.
Smoke Backing Up Into the Room
This is the complaint that gets Dave called out most often. Smoke in the room instead of going up the flue has a handful of causes: a closed damper, a blocked flue, negative air pressure in the home, an undersized flue for the firebox opening, or creosote buildup restricting the draft. Each has a different fix. Dave diagnoses the actual cause before recommending anything – a chimney inspection is usually the right starting point when the cause isn’t obvious.
Gas Insert and Gas Log Issues
Gas fireplaces and gas log sets are common in San Juan Capistrano homes that converted from wood-burning. Pilot lights that won’t stay lit, thermocouples that fail, gas valves that stick, and igniter systems that wear out are all repairable without replacing the whole insert. Dave services gas fireplace components and can advise on whether a repair or replacement makes more sense based on the age and condition of the system.
“Dave is nice, helpful and knowledgeable. Did a good job. Will recommend to anyone needing chimney fireplace service.”
